With AIADMK back in fray, fierce tussle ahead in two bypolls
Chennai | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

The by-elections to two Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu on December 19 would witness a fierce tussle with opposition AIADMK deciding to contest and take on the ruling DMK in the bypoll.

The AIADMK, which had boycotted the by-elections to five Assembly constituencies held on August 18 on the ground that the elections would not be free and fair, reversed its decision and decided to throw its hat in the ring for the December 19 bypoll.

AIADMK General secretary J Jayalalithaa, after visiting the party headquarters here today, announced that her pary would contest the bypolls to Vandavasi and Thiruchendur Assembly constituencies.

''We had boycotted the earlier by-elections to register our protest against irregularities at that time. We had not said that we would do so for ever,'' she said while talking to newspersons.

When Ms Jayalalithaa was resting at the hill resort of Kodanadu, the AIADMK had boycotted the August 18 by-elections to Bargur, Thondamuthur, Cumbum, Ilayankudi and Srivaikundam Assembly constituencies, claiming that the Election Commission was not in a position to conduct elections in a free and fair manner.

The party had also alleged that the DMK had been ''amassing false victories'' by misusing power, unleashing violence and resorting to various forms of electoral malpractices. The bypoll in Vandavasi (Res) is caused by the death of DMK member S P Jayaraman and Thiruchendur following the resignation of the seat by former AIADMK minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan.

On being expelled from the party, Mr Radhakrishnan, who had served as a minister in the previous Jayalalithaa regime, had joined the ruling DMK and resigned the seat, he had won on AIADMK ticket.

In August, the AIADMK had asked its alliance parties, the MDMK, PMK, CPI(M) and CPI also to boycott the by-elections. But the Left parties defied her suggestion and contested the polls, though the MDMK and PMK fell in line.
