India Radioactivity threat from Malta ship turns out to be hoax
Ending nearly six-hours of high anxiety, an anonymous call that a Malta-registered ship ''MV Garland'' , which docked at the outer anchorage off Chennai Port was carrying radioactive material, turned out to be a hoax. Tension mounted at the Chennai Port, when an anonymous caller warned the Traffic Manager of the Port that the ship, with 29 crew members, including 24 Iranians and five Filipinos, was carrying radioactive material. In a swift move, acting Port Trust Chairman Capt Subash Kumar, alerted the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and other coastal security agencies, after which it was decided to launch a search operation. A 20-member team, including personnel drawn from the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Navy, Coast Guard and Port Trust launched the search operation at around 1100 hrs this morning. After a nearly six-hour long operation, the team found that there was no radioactive material in the vessel and allowed the ship to be berthed inside the port. The IGCAR deputed its ''Physicist'' Dr Rajagopal from the Research and Development, and Dr S C Kannan, Director, Environmental Safety Laboratory to conduct the search, Coast Guard sources told UNI. During the search, they found some uranium particles, but declared that they were not harmful, the sources added. The ship, which came from Visakhapatnam on November 17, was carrying 5000 tonnes of cement and 5500 tonnes of other building materials. It sought permission to berth in Chennai Port for loading granite stones. The vessel's next port of call is Singapore, Capt Subash Kumar said. -- (UNI) -- 20MS48.xml
