Tirupati | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

Thousands of devotees participated in the `Rathothsavam,' part of the annual'' Kartheeka Brahmotsavams,'' at the Tiruchanur Temple here this morning.

The idol of Goddess Padmavathi, seated in the century-old wooden chariot colourfully decorated with flowers, was pulled by a large number of devotees through the four main streets around the 'Pushkarini' (Temple Tank). The deity was adorned with the rarest of jewels for the occasion.

Amidst chanting, the ''Ratham'' was pulled by devotees at 0750 hrs, after which the priest performed ''arathi'' to the Goddess. Earlier, at 0530 hrs, the priests performed the sacrificial rituals to the chariot and brought out the deity in a procession to the `Ratha Mandapam,' the starting point of the chariot-ride. TTD Trust Board Chairman D K Audikesavaulu, TTD Executive Officer IYR Krishna Rao and Joint Executive Officer N Yuvaraj were among those who led the chariot from the front. After the ''unjal seva'' later in the evening, the deity would be adorned with jewels. The flower bedecked ''Aswa (horse) Vahanam'' would be taken out between 2000 hrs and 2200 hrs in the night.

The important event of ''Panchami Theertham'' would be performed in the pushkarani (temple tank) tomorrow morning while ''Dwajaavarohanam'' would be held in the evening when the celestial flag would be lowered marking the conclusion of the nine-day Brahmotsavam Festival.
