Connecting tribals to mainstream a big challenge: Sharma
Bhopal | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

Doordarshan Director General Aruna Sharma today said connecting tribals with mainstream of development while preserving their traditions and culture, has been a big challenge before the media.

''This work can be done effectively by various branches of the media,'' Ms Sharma opined while delivering a lecture at Tribal Research and Development Institute here. The D G said it has been a speciality of the tribals that they use natural resources only as per their needs and avoid overexploitation of the natural wealth. But enactment of various new laws have posed danger to their very existence in the forests, she said. ''It is the need of the hour that tribals are apprised of provisions of these laws fully well. The role of media in this task becomes vital. Indian tribal culture dates back to more than 4000 years and is quite rich. There is a need to document their boastful traditions, culture, medicare, literature and arts,'' Ms Sharma said. Speaking on the occasion Institute Director IM Chahal said Madhya Pradesh Tribal Research Institute has been working as a nodal agency for other states' institutes. She termed Doordarshan's contribution in the development works in tribal areas as unparalleled.
