Kapurthala Nov 20 | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

The vigilance staff today arrested the Kapurthala Tehsildar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a complainant for a correction in a Girdawari.

The vilgilance staff also reportedly recovered more than Rs 50,000 from the chamber of tehsildar Manjit Singh.

A vigilance team headed by DSP R S Sandhu raided the tehsil complex this evening and caught the Tehsildar red-handed and recovered the bribe money from his possesion.

According to vigilance staff, complainant Mann Singh submitted an application for a correction in the Girdawari on October 13 but the Tehsildar refused to make a correction on one pretext or the other and demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant.

However, the deal struck for Rs 20,000 with half the amount to be paid in advance.

The complainant lodged a complaint with the Vigilance Bureau at Jalandhar which raided the tehsil complex and caught him red-handed.

Police has registered a case of corruption against him and have taken him to Jalandhar.

The vigilance bureau also raided the residence of Tehsildar in the officers colony but found his house locked.
