Hosts Punjab suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Tamilnadu, losing by an innings and 45 runs on the last day of the four day Super League-II Ranji trophy match at the Gandhi Grounds here today.

Trailing by a massive 293 runs in the first innings, the hosts were all out for 248 in their second knock shortly before lunch today.

The hero for the winners was Ashwin who picked up five wickets for 116 runs, including three of the five that fell today. Aushik picked up three for 47 while S Suresh bagged two for 41.

Resuming at 114 for five, the hosts lost Gambhir (19) in the first few overs. He was caught by Mahesh off the bowling of Suresh.

Loomba (1) too fell cheaply, caught by A Karthik off the bowling of Suresh.

Veteran Dharmani waged a lone battle at one end hitting 56 with the help of nine hits to the fence. He fell lbw to Ashwin at the team score of 187. Avlish (29) and Khanna, who remained unbeaten of 30 delayed Tamilnadu's victory march, resorting to some hard hitting. Avlish in his brief knock hit two fours and three sixes while Khanna smashed four fours and a six in his unbeaten innings.

After Avlish fell to Ashwin, last man Ladda (15) put up some resistance but he became Ashwin's fifth victim.
