Chhattisgarh is to witness three-phase elections to civic bodies on December 21, 24 and 27.

Announcing the schedule at a press conference here today, State Election Commissioner Shivraj Singh said, ''nine municipal corporations, 26 councils and 83 nagar panchayats will go to the polls. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect.'' Counting will take place on December 30 and results of all 2,762 wards along with posts of chairpersons are to be declared on the same day. The notification for the first phase -- comprising six councils and 53 panchayats -- will be issued on December 1.

The notification for the next phase -- for ten councils and 15 panchayats -- will be issued on December 4 and the notification for the final phase will be issued on December 7. The municipal corporations are Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Ambikapur, Chirmiri, Raigarh, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Jagdalpur.

Ballot papers will be used and duration of polling has been reduced by an hour in naxalism-affected Bastar division. Over 32.16 lakh voters, including 15.50 lakh women, are expected to exercise their franchise.
