DMC chief shot; Sec 144 promulgated in Dimapur

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were promulgated in Dimapur today after three unidentified gunmen shot at the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) chairperson.

Official sources said chairperson Khekaho Assumi, along with a relative, was returning from a friend's place last night when the incident occurred. Three unidentified gunmen, who were lurking in the dark, suddenly fired at them, injuring the chairperson on his right wrist and left leg, the police said.

Yesterday, the business community demanded the arrest of the chairperson after he allegedly assaulted a businessman in Dimapur.

A case had been registered against him.

Following the attack on the chairperson, a mob of 50 to 60 poeple with lethal weapons, attacked the residence of the businessman who had filed a FIR against Assumi. The security personnel deployed in the area resorted to firing in the air to disperse the mob and three youths were arrested in this connection. Police also recovered one pistol from one of the arrested.

The situation is tense, but under control, sources said.
