Tripura govt wants fund for land utilisation under Forest Act
Agartala | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

The Tripura government has demanded funding for land utilisation projects for more than 84,000 tribal families who got land deed under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act in the state.

Talking to newpersons here last week, Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Aghore Debbarma said in the conference of Chief Ministers, State Ministers of Tribal Affairs, Social Welfare and Forest Departments on Implementation of the Forest Rights Act 2006, Tripura had proposed to formulate separate projects for land use to maintain bio-diversity in dwellers possession.

''The development of our tribal areas and improvement in the socio-economic condition of our tribal population is linked to our concept of inclusive growth,'' Mr Debbarma said, adding that it needed to empower the tribal communities with the means to determine their destinies, livelihood, security and participation in the processes of social and economic development.

He, however, pointed out that the Tripura government had not been encouraging the mono cash-cropping in the forest areas, rather tried to maintain diversity, which was distributed among 84,384 forest dwellers including two non-tribals out of a total 1.62 lakh applicants who sought the land right under the Act.

Meanwhile, he underlined that the Left front was still advocating for reducing the time-limit for non-tribal dwellers from 75 years to 25 years and they believed it would lead to socio-economic development of the forest dwellers.
