Intermittent rains lash south TN, three dies

Intermittent rains continue to lash the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu for the sixth day in succession, affecting normal life and claimed three lives, today.

Official sources said major reservoirs, irrigation tanks and other water bodies were fast filling prompting the respective district administrations to gear up their official machinery to face any eventuality.

In Ramanathapuram district, two persons, including a woman were electrocuted to death owing to heavy rains. The body of an unidentified youth in his thirties was also recovered at Eragadu village in Rameswaram, this morning. The youth came in contact with a live wire that was snapped from a nearby electric pole and lost his life. In another incident, R Vijayarani (30) of Chathrakudi village was electrocuted to death near her house, early today.

A sexagenarian widow lost her life, when a portion of mud wall of her hut collapsed and fell on her near Anna Market in Sivakasi town in Virudhunagar district, this morning. The deceased was identified as M Kannammal (65).

Two mechanized fishing trawlers were damaged and atleast 20 small country boats drowned in owing to rough sea in Island town of Rameswaram. Most of the fishermen did not venture into sea for fishing due to heavy winds and rough sea.

Meanwhile, the Periyar dam in Theni district was marching towards its full capacity of 136 feet. The level of the dam stood at 125.60 feet with an inflow of 11,382 cusecs. The discharge was 1200 cusecs.

Similarly, the Vaigai dam was also fast filling up. The level of Vaigai dam stood at 59.25 feet, this morning with an inflow of 2230 cusecs and the discharge was 1663 cusecs.
