Explore possibility of mini hydel, solar project, Farooq to J&K
Srinagar | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

Assuring full help from the Centre for overall development of Jammu and Kashmir, Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah asked the state government to come up with a detailed project report for setting up solar panels to overcome the power crisis.

Speaking at a function at Shopian in south Kashmir yesterday, Dr Abdullah said renewable sources like hydro power and sunlight needed to be utilised for energy, especially in backward areas which face power shortage. He asked the district administration to explore the possibilities of establishing mini-hydel projects and identify areas for installing solar panels and come up with a detailed project report as early as possible so that his Ministry at the Centre could take the required steps to help the people.

About the water shortage problem faced by the area, he said measures initiated by the Government should be speeded up.

However, he asked the people to pray earnestly for plenty of rain and snow in the coming months so that streams and rivers were filled with water. Dr Abdullah said the area presents a panoramic view and could be developed as a good tourist destination. Efforts should be made to make the Mughal road motorable throughout the year through provisions like tunnels, he added.

The Union Minister said on-spot police recruitment drive should be initiated in the backward areas so that employment was provided to the youth residing in these areas. He further asked the people to monitor ongoing schemes and report to the administrative units concerned of any misgivings.
