BSF hands over list of 97 hideouts to BDR
Agartala | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

The BSF has reiterated its demand to dismantle the hideouts of Northeastern militants on Bangladesh soil and handed over a list of 97 terror dens to the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) during the four-day Deputy Director and IG level border conference in Sylhet.

Talking to UNI, BSF spokesperson DIG AK Singh said at the conference, which concluded yesterday, in a very warm and cordial atmosphere, both the forces agreed to implement integrated border management approaches.

''It has been decided to hold field-commander level meetings of BSF and BDR more frequently and BDR responded positively to our demand to take action against anti-Indian forces operating from Bangladesh,'' Mr Singh said.

The issues related to transborder crime and illegal infiltration were also discussed in the meeting, besides killing, arrest and abduction of innocent Indians in the bordering locations, he underlined.

According to report, Northeastern militants, including those of the ULFA, PLA, a group of NSCN, NLFT and ATTF have been operating from major locations of Sylhet and Chittagong Hill Tracts and the top leaders of the outfits were living in posh areas of Dhaka.

Bangladesh raised the issues like presence of establishments, roads and barbed wire fence within 150 yards of boundary line and urged the BSF to prevent drug smuggling and cooperate in deportation of freed Indian nationals from Bangladesh.

The conference also stressed on conducting of joint survey of few strategic stretches across the borders and building mutual trust and both sides reached a consensus to address the critical issues in a proper manner, Mr Singh said, adding both the countries agreed to continue cultural programmes, sports and border coordination meetings to strengthen the friendly relations.

The meeting, ahead of DG-level talks between both the border-guarding forces, was the first such high-level meeting after the mutiny in BDR headquarters earlier this year.

BSF's Tripura sector Inspector General SK Mishra was leading the 17-member Indian side, including IGs of Assam-Meghalaya Frontier and Mizoram-Cachar Frontier, besides a representative from Union Home Ministry, while BDR Deputy Director Brig Gen M Obaidul Haque led the 13-member Bangladesh delegation.

Within an hour of conclusion of the BSF-BDR meeting, Bangladeshi miscreants allegedly killed an innocent Indian farmer of Narayanbasti in West Tripura yesterday when he had gone to the border area for grazing his cattle.

Police said the victim was identified as Dinu Telenga (45), who was allegedly forcibly taken to Bangladesh and killed by miscreants.

The BSF has taken up the matter with BDR.
