Jammu | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

A militant-turned BSF solider and his wife were shot dead today by unidentified militants at Kandi in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources said.

The deceased soldier, identified as Mohammad Arif, had come to his residence in Kandi area on leave some days back, sources said.

''Some unidentified militants struck his (Arifs) house this morning and gunned him down along with his wife Shameema, sources said, adding their eight-year-old son Abrar was critically injured in the incident. Arif, who was posted at Udhampur, had surrendered as a militant of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Pir Panjal Regiment (HMPPR) outfit in 1995 and later joined the BSF in 1999, sources told UNI. A police team has rushed to the spot while security forces have launched search operation in the area, sources said.
