Heavy rain continues in Pondy
Puducherry | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

Incessant heavy rain continued to lash Puducherry and it's suburbs under the influence of the low pressure in the Bay.

Several low lying areas were inundated and water entered into more than 500 huts at different areas. The administration was taking steps on a war-footing to pump out the water from the houses as well as the residential areas here.

Residents of Jawahar Nagar here resorted to a road blockade last night to press the administration to pump out water from their houses. Forty five families from Bahour area were shifted to safer places, official sources said.

Puducherry received 116.5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 0830 hrs today. However, rain continued this morning also.

Chief Minister V Vaithilingam announced 10-kg free rice to all red colour ration card holders of BPL families, which would be provided tomorrow onwards.

Two tourists, who went for a sea bath at Vambakeerappalayam near here, were feared drowned in the sea. According to police, Saran Singh(22), hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Nilesh Singh from Madhya Pradesh, along with three other friends, from Bangalore, where they were studying, visited Puducherry yesterday and went for a bath and were feared drowned.

However, searches by the fire service personnel and fishermen last night proved futile.

Distict Collector G Ragesh Chandra, in a release, urged the people in the low-lying areas to shift to safer places as more rain is predicted under the impact of the low pressure in the Bay.

He also said public could contact the control room at the collectorate on toll free number 1070 for any help including the clearing of drainage blocks, removal of trees and electric posts uprooted on the roads.
