Power crisis affects SSI units
Mysore | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

Unscheduled power cuts have affected the productivity of Small Scale Industrial (SSI) units here, forcing them to relocate to other industry friendly places.

Members of Mysore Industries Association (MIA), who meet here to discuss the aggravated power situation which has affected the entire industrial sector, told UNI that the industrial sector was just recovering from the economic slowdown. Unfortunately the factories could not fulfill their orders owing to nearly seven hours of power cut every day, he added. MIA Secretary Mr Suresh Kumar Jain said out of 15,000 SSI units in the city, 60 per cent were closed down for various reasons. The remaining units are functioning at only 40 per cent of their installed capacity owing to the intermittent power supply.

Pointing out the status of the SSIs, he said a few industrial units were already considering thier relocation to other industry friendly places, including Coimbatore, which would ring the death knell for the projected growth and development of the city.

The crisis would affect the creation of new jobs and productivity of the units, he added.

Many hi-tech weaving units, established in the industrial area to provide employment to handloom weavers, were suffering heavily due to the power crisis as they could not repay their bank loans.
