Rain abates in TN, toll mounts to 14, more spells likely
Chennai | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

After two days of heavy pounding, people of this metropolis heaved a sigh of relief as the rains abated this morning. The weatherman has even predicted more rains following a low Pressure over the Comorin area. The toll in rain-related incidents over the last four days under the influence of the active northeast monsoon rose to 14 with one more death reported from the southern Sivakasi in Sivaganga distirct.

Reports received at the police headquarters here said, one person died when a portion of a dilapidated wall collapsed while he was sleeping at his house in Sivakasi early this morning.

There was no let up in rains since the monsoon became vigorous on Friday evening as Chennai city, its suburbs and several parts of coastal districts came under thick sheets of water. After pouring non-stop for nearly 48 hours and all through the night and early this morning, the rains at last abated and the sun came out after two days.

But life continued to remain crippled in the western and northern suburbs of the city and people had to wade through knee deep water.

Coastal districts reports said several low lying areas were marooned.
