ULFA attacks police convoy after 2 leaders remanded to custody

ULFA tonight retaliated by attacking a police convoy near Nalbari after a local court remanded the two ULFA leaders, who were handed over by Bangladesh to India, to ten-day police custody.

The ULFA leaders were produced before the court here today, while the banned organisation called for an Assam bandh on November 9, demanding their release.

Ground level units of ULFA attacked the convoy of Nalbari Superintendent of Police Jitmol Doley this evening. In the ensuing encounter, two ULFA cadres were killed and two pistols were recovered.

Remanded ULFA leader Sashdar Chaudhury is from Nalabari district.

Earlier, the ULFA leaders, Chitrabon Hazarika and Sasha Chauhdury, were produced before the court, which remanded them to ten-day police custody.

They were kept in the high security complex of the Assam Police's Special Branch headquarters. ULFA in an emailed statement called for a 12-hour Assam bandh, demanding release of the two arrested leaders, against whom the police brought charges of sedition.

They were taken out in a special bus from the special branch headquarters to the court this afternoon, surrounded by plain clothes policemen.
