50-55 per cent turnout in Rajasthan by-polls
Jaipur | Saturday, Nov 7 2009 IST

An estimated 50 to 55 per cent of the total 4.1 lakh electorate cast their votes in by-elections to Todabhim(ST) and Salumbar(ST) Assembly seats in Rajasthan, polling for which passed off peacefully today.

The polling began at 0800 hrs on a sedate note at 480 polling booths in both the tribal dominated constituencies in Karauli and Udaipur districts, but picked up later as the day advanced, an election office spokesman said.

Today polling sealed the fate of 13 contestants -- seven in Todabhim(ST) and six in Salumbar(ST). The by-election was necessitated, following the resignation by Dr Kirodi Lal Meena, Independent(Todabhim) and Mr Raghibir Meena, Congress(Salumbar).

They quit their seats after being elected to the Lok Sabha in May.
