Devvarman in semis of Charlottesville ATP Challenger

Somdev Devvarman packed off Matwe Middelkoop of Holland in straight sets to enter the semifinals of the ongoing ATP Challenger event here.

The third seeded Indian did not face much of a challenge from his rival as he eased to a 6-3, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals of the 50,000 dollar hard court event yesterday.

Devvarman will slug it out with American fifth seed Ryan Sweeting for a place in the final. Sweeting, a wild card entrant, shocked top seed Michael Russell 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(1) to enter the last four stage.

However, Sanam Singh, the other Indian in fray, gave a stiff fight to local challenger Kevin Kim before losing 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-7(5).

Making a comeback to the professional circuit after a long hiatus, Sanam conceded the first set before clawing his way back into the match after winning the hard-fought second set.

The third set turned out to be another nail-biting affair but the world number 87 American managed to edge out Sanam to enter the semifinals.
