Criminals attack scribe

A scribe of a Oriya daily ''Samaj'' was admitted to a hospital at Bhubaneswar today with multiple fractures after being allegedly attacked by some unknown criminals here yesterday.

According to an FIR lodged with the Kumbaharapara police station here, the attack on Jagannath Bastia was allegdly planned by Puri Municipaltiy vice-chairman Sabya Sachi Mohapatra, a close associates of former Orissa Speaker Maheswar Mohanty.

Mr Bastia was attacked while he was returning home from office.The journalist, being a known environmentalist, was fighting for the removal of illegal constructions and encroachments from the sweet water zone area in the city.

He had taken up the issue with the chief minister and raised it in the High Court.Due to his efforts, the chief minister as well as the High Court had ordered for the removal of the illegal structures from the prohibited area.

Police registered a case against Mr Mahapatra and were investigating into the incident.

The local press club, lawyers of the Puri Bar and the residents had demanded stringent action against the culprits. Scribes were planning to meet Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to apprise him of the hooliganism by the so-called ruling party leaders.

Meanwhile, the daily has also drawn the attention of the chief minister and Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj, urging them to take prompt action against the criminals involved in the gruesome attack on the scribe.
