Khanvilkar and Powar place Mumbai on top

Overnight not out batsmen Khanvilkar and Ramesh Powar placed Mumbai in a comfortable position at the end of third days play against Punjab in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match here today.

The pair were associated in a 163-run partnership for the eighth wicket as Mumbai, overnight 244 for 7, declared their first innings at 471 for 9 in 141 overs.

Khanvilkar, overnight 16, went on to score 87 with the help of nine fours and one six. Ramesh Powar, resuming at his overnight score of 10 went on to complete his well compiled unbeaten 125 which was laced with 17 boundaries. Kulkarni remained not out on 15.

At close of play, Punjab were 55 for the loss of opener Sunny Sohal (4) who was caught by Khanvilkar of the bowling of former Test medium pacer Zaheer Khan. Left handed Ravi Inder and captain Ankur Kakar were batting on 26 and 24 runs respectively.

Punjab were trailing by 172 runs with nine wickets in hand.
