Campaign for bypolls ends Thiruvananthapuram | Thursday, Nov 5 2009 IST
The campaigning for the by-elections in Kannur, Ernakulam and Allappuzha assembly constituencies in Kerala ended this evening. The campaigning was marked by allegations and counter allegations of irregularities in the voters list in Kannur and the subsequent replacement of the District Collector and the deployment of Central Paramilitary forces. The Congress-led United Democratic Front(UDF) is confident of regaining all the three assembly segments while the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front(LDF) was making all efforts to wrest the seats. All the three union ministers from the State - Defence Minister A K Antony, Union Overseas minister Vayalar Ravi and union minister of sate for Home Mullapally Ramachandran had campaigned for the three UDF candidates. As the by-polls are being held after the LDF faced a setback, its machinary was going all out to emerge victorious. The by-poll was necessitated in the three constituencies following the election of sitting MLAs to the Lok Sabha in the last general elections. -- (UNI) -- 05MS38.xml
