Kerala, TN must sort out dam row in SC: Varadarajan
Puducherry | Thursday, Nov 5 2009 IST

Stating that the conflict between Tamil Nadu and Kerala on the Mullaperiyar issue was 'unfortunate', CPI(M) politbureau member K Varadarajan today said both the states should sort it out through the Supreme Court.

Addressing a press conference here he said ''guarantee of water'' was more important than the issue whether Kerala is constructing a new dam or not as the dam is in Kerala's territory.

He called upon the political parties not to politicise the issue, which would lead to a clash between the people of the two states.

He said the Union government also had a part to play in resolving the crisis. If the Centre takes a stand in this regard, not only the issue of Mullaperiyar, but also water problems in several rivers in the country could be amicably resolved.

Referring to the spectrum scam, Varadarajan alleged that Union IT minister Raja's continuation in power was not politically or legally correct. Raja had stated that he also did what the BJP government had done earlier.

He said the CBI was conducting an enquiry now. But how could it be free and fair when the minister concerned was in power.

The Centre should take a decision in this regard immediately and the Prime Minister should give an explanation, Mr Varadarajan said, adding whether it is a Cabinet decision or collective decision is secondary. ''Whether we lost crores of rupees in the deal was primary,'' he said.
