Shreya Ghei emerges winner in Ladies Northern India Amatuer
New Delhi | Thursday, Nov 5 2009 IST

Shreya Ghei turned in a four over 76 to emerge the winner on the final day of the 42nd Ladies Northern India Amatuer Golf Championships here at the Delhi Golf Club today.

Shreya, who won the Sri Lanka Amateur Open last year, finished the day with a total score of nine over 225.

Haryana golfer Vani Kapur finished second with an overall score of 13 over 229. Four strokes behind was Ankita Tiwana, who signed off with 17 over 233.

Teeing from the front nine, Shreya, who was the overnight leader by five strokes, birdied on the fifth before she dug herself into the sixth with a triple bogey. She added another birdie to her card on the eighth hole. However, the Delhi golfer considers the 25-foot putt on the fifth as the turning point of her game today.

While her back nine had just a birdie on the 12th, the Delhi golfer chipped in a double bogey on the 16th.

''The course was very tough today, so the local conditions did helped me in my win.

''Of course, this win is special to me. I have been losing from the verge of victories in the last few tournaments. So I am really enjoying the win today, which I deserved to,'' the 16-year-old winner, who finished off third in Chennai Open and second in Bangalore Open, told UNI.

Shreya further said she was keenly looking forward to take some positives from the win to upcoming events- Chandigarh open, Noida Opne and West Bengal Open (last tour of the year).

Meanwhile, Vani who was three shots behind the leader to finish at three over 75 said the greens was playing fast at the DCG here.

''But I am expecting some better play at the Noida Open,'' Vani said.

The 15-year-old golfer started off brightly chipping in two consecutive birdies on the third and fourth holes.

In contrast, she had only one birdie in her back nine. She birdied the par 3 17th hole, which she believes was the best shot in her day's round.

Runners up at the Chandigarh Open, Ankita, who had a bad day yesterday carding 11 over, said she just wanted to play her game today. She had a sedate start today and birdied on the seventh, eighth in her front nine.

While on her back nine, she holed the 12th with a birdie before she had another birdie on the par-5 14th, which she calls her best of the day.

Defending champion Neha Tripathi was disappointed with her finish at the eighth spot and said she faltered at various occasions, which dropped her score to 13 over 85 on the final day.

Army Open champion and the youngest women golfer to win All India Championship last year Gurbani Singh finished off a disappointing 13 over 85.
