Surgery in Chandigarh hospital shown live in Paris

A Chandigarh hospital today achieved the distinction of having a surgery done in operation theatre getting telecast live at third Indo-European Course on Revascularisation (IECR) at prestigious George Pompidou Hospital Amphitheatre in Paris.

Mukat Hospital senior consultant, Invasive Cardiology and Director of Cardiac Cath Lab at Mukat Heart Institute, Chandigarh, Sudheer Saxena and his team showcased and demonstrated their interventional skills live at this joint conference of top Indian and European Interventional Cardiologists. Dr Ravi Inder Singh, Medical director of Mukat Hospital here said, ''This is the only hospital, north of Delhi, that had been selected for live telecast of cases to the international cardiac meeting.'' The conference which discussed and analysed the latest developments in the field of interventional, cardiology saw participation of more than 1000 cardiologists from USA, South America, Australia, South East Asia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh besides the top cardiologists from India and Europe.

The participants at Paris not only saw this case being performed live but also interacted and discussed the nuances of the case with Dr Saxena.

Dr Saxena said the patient who underwent procedure during the live surgery was 59-year-old and suffered from severe angina on walking or exercising.

''He had undergone bypass surgery in 1997. On reinvestigation at our hospital, it was found that out of three bypass grafts he had received, one was totally closed while other two had more than 95 per cent blockages. With the patients consent, it was decided to open up blockages in these grafts so as to restore blood flow to the heart,'' said Dr Saxena, who has so far performed more than 10,000 diagnostic and more than 5,000 coronary angioplasty procedures.

The Chief patron of the meeting was the world renowned Cardiologist from France, Dr Alan Cribier.

Besides Dr Cribier, the course directors included many famous US cardiologists like Dr Greg Stone, Dr Fayaz Shawl, Dr Marc Silvestri etc. Dr. Vivek Gupta was the only Course Director from India.

Ambassador of India in France Dr Ranjan Mathur inaugurated the conference.
