Chidambaram asks Buddhadeb to ensure law and order
New Delhi | Thursday, Nov 5 2009 IST

Reacting to reports of intermittent clashes between workers of Trinamool Congress and CPI(M), Home Minister P Chidambaram today asked the West Bengal government to ensure law and order, notwithstanding the provocation for the violence. The Home Minister made this remark on being asked at the CCEA briefing as to what steps the government were taking relating to the violence. ''I did speak to the Chief Minister and impressed upon him that whatever be the cause of the inter-party clashes, it is the duty of the State Government to maintain law and order,'' Mr Chidambaram said. Reports indicate that yesterday's clashes took place between workers of CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress at Khanakul in Hooghly district. Asked whether the Centre had sought any report from the State Government, the Home Minister observed that the Centre has been asking for reports from the State almost on a regular basis. Mr Chidambaram said in regard to yesterday's episode, he had spoken to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee. ''I did tell the Chief Minister that you must ensure that law and order is maintained whatever be the provocation for the clashes,'' he said. Ahead of the Assembly by-polls in ten constituencies on November 7, the state has been witnessing sporadic clashes between Trinamool and CPI (M) workers.
