India Phuguri tea garden of Darjeeling reopens after 7 days
Phuguri tea estate at Mirik was today reopened, exactly seven days after the management had declared suspension of work following trouble between the employer and workers. All 651 workers began plucking of leaves after the management, represented by Darjeeling Tea Association and trade union leaders on behalf of GJM-affiliated Terai Dooars Plantation Labour Union, yesterday agreed for resumption of work. The management had declared suspension of work on October 28 at the garden after the workers allegedly roughed up general manager Rajesh Kaushal and assistant manager J Chowdhury for their dispatching of procured tea with the consent of office clerks the previous day. An FIR was also lodged in this context alleging stealing of tea from the premises by the management staff. Mirik police station under Kurseong sub-division today confirmed reopening of the tea estate and joining of the workers.
