India Minister's call on saving languages
Stating UNESCO in a report had noted that many languages were on the verge of extinction, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari today called up on for saving languages. Speaking at the All India Official Language Seminar ' Hindi Sangosthi-2009' at the Pondicherry Central University here today, Ms Purandeswari said worldwide over 6,000 spoken languages were there and in Asia, it was 2980. In India, a little over 200 languages are there of which 22 were given official language status. She said every region had its own sensitivity, history and culture and if this was to be protected, it was important to save the languages in the respective regions. Stating translation of any literature can help in the unity of the nation, she said in MHRD a particular department was engaged in such transalaton. Speaking on the occasion, Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor J A K Tareen said there was no permanent staff in the Hindi cell of the university and called up on the Minister to direct the UGC to sanction posts. -- (UNI) -- 05MS26.xml
