Pondy NIT to begin next year

The Union Government had sanctioned a National Institute of Tchnology for Puducherry which would start functioning from the next accademic year, Chief Minister V Vaithilingam said here today.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Vaithilingam said orders in this regard had already been issued and the director of the NIT Tiruchirappalli was appointed as in-charge of the proposed NIT here.

The Chief Minisiter said a Central team would soon visit Puducherry and Karaikal to identify a site for the NIT.

The Centre had sought 300 acre of land for the same and the administration had requested reduction in the extent of land and permitted the administration to set up the NIT on 50 or 100 acre.
