Jaya seeks MK's action on court order to suspend cops

AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa today sought to know what action Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi propose to take on the Madras High Court order, asking the State Government to suspend four police officials in connection with the February 19 violence in the court campus. In a statement here, she said, almost a week had passed since the judgment was delivered, but the Government was yet to implement the court directive She said the Madras High court found four top police officers, including the then City Police Commissioner K Radhakrishnan, responsible on several counts for contempt proceedings and named them for suspension and also directed the State Government to initiate disciplinary action against them, as the attack by the police amounted to an assault on the judiciary. ''Mr Karunanidhi should spell out what action he plans to take. If he wants to protect the errant officers, then he should be ready to face contempt proceedings. Either way, the Chief Minister is answerable'', she added. Recalling the various incidents of police excessess in the State, Ms Jayalalithaa criticised Mr Karunanidhi for defending the police force saying ''We should not use a few isolated incidents to put a black mark on the service being rendered by the police.'' She said, during her regime, it was the very same police force that had maintained an enviable degree of law and order to the extent that Tamil Nadu was considered a model state -- a virtual sanctuary of peace. ''It was this police force that had finished off the dreaded Forest brigand Veerappan, who had held the State to ransom for more than two decades and brought an end to 'rowdy raj' in Chennai,'' she said. ''Yet, this proud force has now been made to bite the dust. It stands indicted by the Madras High Court'', Ms Jayalalithaa said, adding the February 19 clash in the court campus was not an isolated incident, as being made out by Mr Karunanidhi and recalled the various incidents that took place in the State.
