Deemed Varsities lack infrastructure, faculty: Sibal
Chennai | Thursday, Nov 5 2009 IST

Expressing concern over lack of infrastructural facilities in some Deemed Universities, Union Human Rrsource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said there was need to rethink the way varsities were set up in the country. Considering that some of the universities did not have requisite infrastructural facilities and faculty, fresh applications for setting up such varsities would be considered only after studying the recommendations of a committee formed for this purpose.

In a brief chat with newspersons after awarding scholarships to students of SSN Institutions on the outskirts of the city last night, Mr Sibal said any fresh applications for deemed varsities would be taken up for consideration only after studying the report of the committee. He said the committee had recently submitted its review report to the HRD Ministry on the present status of deemed universities in the country. ''I will study the report and take action based on its recommendations'', he added.

Earlier, addressing the students, Mr Sibal lamented that some of the deemed varsities in the country, including some of those in Tamil Nadu, did not have requisite infrastructural facilities.

While some of the universities did not have the faculty, some others neither had the infrastructure nor the faculty. There was a need to rethink the way universities are set up in the country, he said while advocating drastic changes in the educational system to change the way students were taught in schools.
