India UP sugar mills decide not to start crushing season
In an important decision which could have an impact in the production of sugar in the country, Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mills Association(UPSMA) has announced not to start crushing season of the private mills in the state, scheduled to commence from this week. The decision of the UPSMA was taken at a meeting held in New Delhi this evening. According to an official of the Association, a delegation of UPSMA would soon meet Chief Minister Mayawati to apprise the government about the problems of the private mill owners of the state. ''We would ask the state government to start the crushing of sugarcane in the cooperative sugar mills'', the official said. The meeting also resolved to convey to the state government that the mills are ready to consider the demand of the farmers to hike the price of cane. Agitation by the farmers demanding hiked price of their cane has resulted in severe law and order problem in the state for the past one week while the state government has now banned import of raw sugar by the mills due to the farmers protest.
