UP Chakbandi department accepts alive people were declared 'dead'
Lucknow | Thursday, Oct 22 2009 IST

Uttar Pradesh Chakbandi department has admitted that some 'alive' people were declared 'dead' in records and their land were grabbed, following irregularities.

The department accepted the fact in a reply filed under the Right To Information (RTI) Act, 2005. Lal Bihari 'Mritak', a victim of corruption who fought to prove himself alive, sought the list of such people from the department under the RTI Act.

Talking to UNI here today, he said the Chakbandi department has divulged the names of only 20 people, whose land was grabbed after being declared dead in records.

As per the list received from Ashok Chandra, the deputy director of the Chakbandi department, the 'victims' hailed from Unnao, Hardoi, Lucknow, Azamgarh, Muzaffarnagar, Sidhhardhnagar, Kannauj, Barabanki, Faizabad and Rampur.

Mr Bihari, however, said the list was incomplete. He said he had sought the details of such people across the state, but the department furnished information for just 10 districts. ''Also, the details are unsatisfactory as thousands of people loose their property after being declared dead fakely,'' he claimed.
