Dehradun | Sunday, Oct 18 2009 IST

Portals of the famous Gangotri temple in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand were closed today for six months because of the onset of the winter season. B V R Purushottam, DM, Uttarkashi told UNI that amid chanting of Vedic hymns, the chief priest performed a special puja in the presence of temple officials and administrative authorities and closed the doors of the temple around 1215 hours.

Thousands of pilgrims thronged the temple during the closing ceremony. After the closure of the temple, the idol of goddess Ganga was taken to Mukhva village in Uttarkashi district, the godess's winter sojourn.
