More than 70 cyclists to participate in Tour of Nilgiris
Bangalore | Monday, Sep 21 2009 IST

More than 70 cyclists are expected to participate in the second edition of 'Tour of Nilgiris' (TFN), kicking off here on December 15. According to a release here today, the eight-day cycling tour covering 900 km will passe through Bangalore, Mysore, Hassan, Mercara, Irupu, Sultanbathery and Ooty. It was a first-of-its-kind sporting event in the country which would focuse on spectacular heritage of South Indian and its culture, cuisines and people. The TFN was organised by RideACycle Foundation, a non-profit advocacy group promoting sustainable transport, responsible travel and environmentally and socially responsible bicycling opportunities. Last year, 56 riders completed the extreme tour, including two riders from the adventure wing of the Indian Air Force. The longest cycling event in the country, would be the most scenic ride as it would expose riders to the incredible bio-diversity of the Nilgiris. The TFN was fully supported by emergency medical services, qualified medical personnel, support teams that would ensure food and water were available to the riders along the route and sweeper vehicles. In the release, Mr Ravi Ranjan, the founding trustee of the RAC-F, said ''the success of the TFN in 2008 has ensured that more people want to go out on the TFN that aims at creating awareness among the general public about the multiple benefits of commuting by the most humble mode of transport-the cycle.''
