V P Singh's Jan Morcha merges with Congress
Lucknow | Saturday, Jul 25 2009 IST

Jan Morcha, a political outfit of the farmers floated by former Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh, today merged with the Congress in the presence of senior leaders.

Ajey Singh, Jan Morcha president and son of the late PM, announced the merger of his party with the Congress in the presence of Congress general secretary and UP in-charge Digvijay Singh and Congress state unit president Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

Mr Digvijay Singh, welcoming the leaders of Jan Morcha in the party, said that now the Congress would be strengthened with them.

UP Jan Morcha president and former minister Kailashnath Singh Yadav was also present on the occasion.

Earlier, the decision of the merger of Jan Morcha with the Congress was approved by party president Sonia Gandhi and party General Secretary Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi During the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, Jan Morcha had contested the elections alone despite having an electoral pact with the Lok Janshakti Party of Mr Ram Vilas Paswan. The party had, however, parted ways after understanding between the LJP, the SP and the RLD.

Jan Morcha president Ajey Singh had contested from the Fatehpur seat and had lost the Lok Sabha polls. Fatehpur was the traditional seat of V P Singh, who parted ways from the Congress in late 80s and formed Jan Morcha.
