Save youth from drug addiction: Dhumal

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today gave a clarion call to student organisations to come forward and help in protecting the youth from falling prey to drug addiction and channel their energy towards nation building and constructive purposes. He was speaking on the occasion of 60th anniversary of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at a state-level function organised in Himachal Pradesh University auditorium as 'Meritorious Students Honouring Ceremony' here. He said youth were the valuable asset and needed to be groomed as a responsible citizens so that they were able to shoulder the responsibility of national reconstruction successfully.

Prof Dhumal cautioned the youth to beware of vested interests misguiding them towards self-destructive habits like drug addiction, and exhorted the ''awakened students organisations like ABVP to thwart such elements with vigilance.'' He said the state government was committed to maintain academic atmosphere in all educational institutions where the student organisations were required to play pro-active role. The Chief Minister lauded the contribution of ABVP in inculcation of patriotism, love for the nation among the youth and guide them through all odds. He expressed hope that the ABVP would prove true to its objectives and work for national reconstruction more vigorously. He also awarded meritorious students in academics and extra curricular activities from different educational institutions from the state with commendation certificate and memento in recognition of the achievement they had made in different spheres.

Prof Sunil Gupta, Vice Chancellor, HP University, lauded the contribution of ABVP in maintenance of the best academic atmosphere on the University campus. Regional Organising Secretary, ABVP Bihari Lal Sharma said ABVP activists with membership of over five lakh, were active in 5,000 educational institutions all over the country. Dr Dev Dutt Sharma, State President, ABVP, revealed that year long celebrations would be carried in the state to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of ABVP.
