India IPS officer named in illegal child adoption case
An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has been named in an allegedly illegal child adoption case in Uttar Pradesh following National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directions, a police official said Saturday. Eight others, including a police inspector and a constable, also face the charges of facilitating the illegal adoption of a child three years ago. "Anand Swaroop, the deputy inspector general (DIG), Gorakhpur, and eight others have been booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Schedule Caste/Scheduled Tribe Act following the NHRC directives," police inspector Karan Singh told IANS. According to police, Mewa Ram of Bareilly has alleged that a woman, now based in Mauritius, had illegally adopted his son by taking his signatures on blank papers three years ago. Mewa Ram said he had registered a complaint with police but the then district police chief, Swaroop, only helped the woman in adopting his child. Mewa Ram later approached the NHRC that initiated a probe. "On the basis of its inquiry, the NHRC has directed us to lodge the case against Swaroop and others involved in the adoption," said Singh. asit/sk/am ( 199 Words) 2009-07-04-20:01:34 (IANS)
