NCW proposes to set up boards to rehabilitate rape victims
New Delhi | July 04, 2009 5:14:14 PM IST

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has proposed to set up a board at district level to rehabilitate rape victims.

The NCW has drawn a rehabilitation scheme for rape victims, which would help them to resume normal lives.

Addressing a press conference here, NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas said the commission has sent the details of the scheme to the Prime Minister, and also demanded its speedy implementation.

The draft scheme proposes to set up a criminal injuries relief and rehabilitation board at every district, the victim can get a rehabilitation package, including financial assistance by applying to this board, Vyas said.

Apart from boards at the district level, a national board is also proposed to be set up as part of the scheme which would lay down procedures for district boards.

Vyas disclosed that according to the National Crime Records Bureau there are 2.78 crore-rape cases pending in courts at different levels.

She also said there is an imminent need to introduce a new law to deal with sexual violence against women. Such a law should redefine the word rape making it more comprehensive and cover molestation and eve teasing, which were equally acts of sexual assault. (ANI)
