People losing interest in poll process: Meira Kumar
Bhopal |Saturday, 2009 4:35:05 PM IST

Expressing concern over the decline in polling percentage, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Saturday called upon lawmakers to introspect why people were losing interest in the poll process.

Inaugurating a two-day orientation programme for Madhya Pradesh legislators, Meira Kumar said legislature was the most powerful body and the lawmakers should use their powers for the welfare of the common man.

"You should work in a manner that the person sitting in the last row was benefited by your actions," she told the legislators, adding that once elected, lawmakers should work above party lines.

"While the opposition should show the dignity to appreciate the good work done by the government, those belonging to the ruling party should also show the courage to point out the aberrations of the government," she added.

Besides Meira Kumar, Madhya Pradesh assembly Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kailash Vijaywargiya and the Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi will address the two-day seminar.
