Jammu |Saturday, 2009 4:05:06 PM IST

Vice President Hamid Ansari Saturday unveiled the memorial of Brigadier Usman, a battle hero of the Indian Army, at Jhangar near the Line of Control (LOC) that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

Ansari unveiled the memorial in presence of senior army officials and other civil dignitaries at Jhangar in Rajouri district.

Brig. Usman, popular hero of Jhangar, was awarded Maha Vir Chakra posthumously. He led 55 independent Para Brigade to counter the Pakistani raiders in 1947-48 and also helped in freeing Naushera and Jhangar in Rajouri district from Pakistani occupation in February 1948. He died on July 3, 1948.
