Senior police official to supervise Shopian probe team
Srinagar |Saturday, 2009 2:35:07 PM IST

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered that an inspector general of police will henceforth supervise the Special Investigating Team (SIT) probing the rape and murder of two women in south Kashmir's Shopian town.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the local bar association, the division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice Muhammad Yaqoob Mir ordered Friday that the SIT would be supervised by Inspector General of Police (Central Investigation Department) Farooq Ahmad and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Armed Police) Rouful Hassan.

Following the public outrage across the valley over the rape and murder of 22-year-old Neelofar Jan and 17-year-old Asiya Jan, whose bodies were found by a stream in Shopian town May 30, the state government had constituted an SIT headed by a superintendent of police to investigate the case.

The high court also directed the SIT to interrogate and put to narco-analysis all the four officials, including the former district police chief, suspended by the government for negligence and destruction of evidence in the case.

The chief justice said the DNA tests and the post-mortem of the victims had been not been done properly.

Justice Ghosh opined the bodies of the victims could be exhumed for fresh DNA sampling but this was subject to the consent of their relatives.

The division bench of the high court also directed the central government to ensure complete cooperation in the case by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
