Another suspected custodial death in Delhi

Delhi Police Friday were accused of second custodial death in as many days when the family of a 50-year-old alleged that he was beaten to death by officials of anti-corruption bureau (ACB). The police, however, said they will wait for the autopsy report to know the exact cause of death.

The family of Virender Kaushik, inspector (enforcement) in the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), lodged a complaint at Prashant Vihar police station alleging that ACB officials beat him to death in their custody Thursday.

They called up my father to their Civil Lines office before taking him to the forensic laboratory in Rohini. The ACB officials say there he complained of illness, so they took him to the Saroj Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, Kaushik's son Sandeep alleged.

The police, however, said they have sent Kaushik's body for post-mortem and would take action after the report comes out.

Kaushik was arrested in a sting operation by the ACB for demanding Rs.100,000 from a vendor in Connaught Place in October 2008.

Earlier on Thursday, angry relatives and family members of a 26-year-old man blocked traffic in south Delhi, alleging that he was killed in police custody.
