BSP fields Ganga Charan Rajput, Sriram Pal for RS bypolls
Repeating | Wednesday, Jun 10 2009 IST

Giving its thrust in the Bundelkhand region and to promote the backwards, the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh today fielded Ganga Charan Rajput and Sriram Pal as the party candidates for the by-election to two seats of the Rajya Sabha.

Both the candidates filed their papers on the last day of filing nominations. The scrutiny of the papers would be held tomorrow.

As no other candidates filed their papers, both would be announced winners after the expiry of the last date of withdrawal of the nominations on June 13, said Returning Officer and Principal Secretary (Assembly) Pradeep Kumar Dubey here.

The candidates filed their nominations in two sets with each set having 10 proposers. While Mr Rajput filed his nomination for the seat vacated by former Samajwadi Party trader leader Banwari Lal Kanchal, Mr Pal filed the nomination for the seat left by BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi. The term of Mr Rajput's seat would expire on April 2, 2012 and of Mr Pal's seat on July 4, 2010.

Ganga Charan Rajput, a new entrant in the BSP just before the Lok Sabha elections, had contested from Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat against BJP's Feroze Varun Gandhi where he lost his deposit.

An established political turncoat, Mr Rajput, a Lodh by caste, had won Hamirpur Lok Sabha seat twice on BJP's ticket in 1996 and 1998 and once on Janta Dal's ticket in 1989. He was also very close to former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh.

He also earned his name by firing in the air before 10 Janpath, residence of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, demanding her to accept the Prime Ministerial post. Mr Rajput was also associated with Congress and Janmorcha.

Surprisingly, Mr Rajput circulated a letter of Mr Banwari Lal Kanchal, who said that he was not interested in going to Parliament and would continue to work for the traders within the party in the state.

Mr Sriram Pal, old BSP cadre of late Kanshi Ram and a backward caste leader, was Minister in the BSP government thrice in 1993, 1995 and 1997. He was also elected to the state Assembly from Jalaun seat in Bundelkhand region twice.
