Slum Children to get free treatment
Bangalore | Wednesday, Jun 10 2009 IST

Narayana Hrudayalaya, world's largest paediatric cardiac hospital, has entered into a tie-up with a city-based NGO ''Yuva Bengaluru'' to provide treatment for children living in the city slums.

Recently the hospital had successfully treated a 11-year-old girl Gayathri, diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect (hole in the heart), under Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya Scheme of the National Rural Health Mission programme which provides free treatment for children studying in government and government-aided schools.

Yuva Bengaluru took the initiative of helping Gaythris family and approached the Narayana Hrudayalaya.

A five-member team of doctors led by Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Dr Colin John, Senior Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, operated upon the child for four hours.

Yuva Bengaluru President G Kiran said ''we are extremely grateful to the authorities at Narayana Hrudayalaya for their prompt support and continued cooperation. We hope to save more lives through this association and ensure quality care to the needy children.'' The tie-up would allow the hospital to coordinate health camps and initiate social service activities. The NGO would also function as a point of contact between the hospital and slum children who are in need of urgent medical attention.
