20 couples tie knot at group marriage ceremony by Guild For Service New Delhi | Saturday, Apr 11 2009 IST
Twenty couples belonging to different religious backgrounds today united in holy matrimony in a simple yet solemn ceremony under the auspices of the Guild For Service. ''This is our contribution to society, to provide a fillip to national integration and communal harmony. There is no better way to do this than to unite people forever in a sacred bond with underlying respect, tolerance and dignity,'' Guild for Service Chairperson Mohini Giri said today. ''We also care for the environment so we ensure that the marriage ceremony is a day marriage so we dont use any extra lights. In any case the radiant gleam of happiness lights up the marriage venue!'' She said the practice of group marriages also helps eliminate the pernicious practice of dowry. The Guild For Service with the mandate of empowerment of the underprivileged and marginalized, has been conducting Group Marriage Ceremonies twice a year since the past four decades. The expense free marriages are possible only because of the voluntary efforts of sensitized people who have contributed both in cash and kind to ensure an auspicious beginning for the newly wedded couples. ''We also ensure that these couples are responsible citizens and hence counselors from the Family Planning Association are called to counsel them on effective ways of family planning and use of contraceptives. The motto of hum do humara ek is also taught to them,'' she said. It is through such endeavors that the Guild For Service seeks to function as a catalyst for change in the society. -- (UNI) -- 11DI18.xml
