Theni | Monday, Feb 23 2009 IST

After nearly 36 hours of operation, a rescue team retrieved a six-year-old boy who fell into a 350-foot borewell in a farm at Rajathani Village in Theni District of Tamil Nadu, this evening. Superintendent of Police R Sudhakaran told UNI over telephone from this evening the boy was rescued in an unconscious stage and being taken to the government medical college hospital. His legs were injured. The doctors would know his condition only after examination, he added. It was not known immediately whether boy was alive or not. Soon after he was rescued from the borewell, he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. A rescue team comprising technical experts from Army, Fire Services, Police and Forest Department managed to pull E Mayee Erulan, a first standard student by 1900 hrs. Mayee Erulan, son of Ettappan, an agriculture labourer, had fallen into the narrow pit, while playing, yesterday. Work on digging a parallel hole adjacent to the borewell with an earth moving equipment was hampered owing to huge rocks, this afternoon. However, in consultation with technical experts from the Army, the rescue team finally managed to pull him out. District Collector P Muthuveeran and senior police officials supervised the rescue operation. Earlier, the boy's mother E Azhagammal fell unconscious this evening and was given first aid.
