Two wild animals killed after they injured four in Kashmir

Two wild animals were killed after they injured four people in the Kashmir valley where the man-animal conflict has left 80 people dead and over 300 injured during the past two years.

Official sources said about a dozen wild animals were also killed by the people in retaliation during the same period.

They said a bear appeared in a village at Achabal in south Kashmir district of Anantnag and attacked the villagers.

Two villagers were wounded in the attack, they said adding later villager killed the bear with lathis and stones in retaliation.

A wild bear entered Zakoor area in the outskirts of the city.

Before the bear could be caught, it attacked and injured a wildlife employee Mudasir Ahmad and a child Nisar Ahmad. The bear later managed to escape in the bushes again, they said adding the injured were hospitalised.

A bear was shot dead by police last evening at Ganderbal when he tried to attack villagers, they said. On October 10, a bear was attacked and killed by villagers in Shopian at it attacked and injured three people.

Earlier on October seven another bear was killed by the villagers after he attacked and injured three people in Anantnag district.

The villagers, living near the woods, alleged that wild-animals often attack and injured them in the area as the Wildlife department had failed to take any preventive measures.

The man-wild animal conflict has increased in the Kashmir valley forcing wildlife authorities to formulate a comprehensive management plan to meet the challenge. The plan which included involving infrastructural strengthening, awareness campaign and better communication.

The plan has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and State Planning Department for financial assistance.

More than 80 people, including women and children, were killed and 330 others wounded in animal attacks in the Jammu and Kashmir during the past two years. In retaliation about a dozen wild animals were also killed by the agitated people during the period, rejecting the protests by animal lovers and NGOs.
