Rice to be smuggled seized Chennai | Tuesday, Sep 30 2008 IST
The Docks Intelligence Unit (DIU),attached to Custom House, seized 1,684 bags of rice, attempted to be smuggled to Singapore from Chennai Port in the guise of exporting sugar. An official release here said two containers, brought to the Chennai Port, were declared to contain white crystal sugar in 1,840 bags by its exporter, Star Impex of Coimbatore. However, on examination of the containers, it was found the first layer of bags in both the containers contained sugar while the remaining contained rice. In all, 1,684 bags of rice were kept concealed in the two containers. As export of non-basmati rice was banned, the same, valued at Rs 10.5 lakhs, was seized, it said. Investigation revealed one M Antony Samy was involved in the attempted smuggling. He was arrested and remanded to judicial custody, it said. It was learnt there was great demand for rice in Singapore, which fetched hudge profit as it was sold at around Rs 120 per kg in the city state, the release added. -- (UNI) -- 30MS50.xml
