Inspector M C Sharma dies in encounter

Inspector Mohan Chandra Sharma, injured in today's encounter with Indian Mujahideen terrorists this morning at Jamia Nagar in South Delhi, succumbed to his injuries here this evening.

The end of the 42-year-old Inspector came around evening at the Holy Family Hospital, said a senior police official, adding that the Special Cell Inspector was critically injured in the exchange of fire while leading from the front.

''Inspector Sharma, who led today's 'operation', had received four bullets of which three hit his abdomen.'' Sharma who joined Delhi Police in 1989, was absorbed by the Special Cell in 1997.

Reciepient of six gallantry awards, of which two were President's medal and four police medals, Inspector Sharma had shot down nearly 75 outlaws including 35 terrorists.

''A very brave, dynamic and intelligent officer, Inspector Sharma was one of the most illustrious of Delhi Police personnel.'' A specialist of technical intelligence gathering Inspector Sharma was an asset to the Special Cell which banked upon him for crucial breakthroughs at ground level, the official added.

Commissioner Y S Dadwal, during his press conference, while appreciating Sharma's valient efforts in the encounter had said he was one of the most decorated officers of Delhi Police.
